Cherry Daniel, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, has represented the first Congressional District since 1996. She is a professional educator, having served as a teacher, school district director, and assistant superintendent and S. C. State Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum selected her to serve as the State Director of Lifelong Learning and Community Education. In 2008, she was selected to establish the first online virtual public charter school in South Carolina. Daniel holds a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education from the College of Charleston. She earned a M.Ed. and Ed.S. degree in School Administration from The Citadel. Additionally, she earned her doctorate degree in Educational Administration from South Carolina State University. Daniel served on the United Way of South Carolina Executive Board and the Lowcountry Graduate Center (elected vice-chair). In March 2004, Governor Mark Sanford appointed Daniel to serve on the State Workforce Investment Board. Daniel has served as President of the S.C. Association for Adult Education Directors, President of the Association for Community Education, and President of the S.C. Association of Continuing Education. She has served as an adjunct professor, teaching professional development courses for teachers and administrators. In 2007, the Governor awarded Dr. Daniel the Silver Crescent award as a result of her exemplary work in public education.
