UPDATE – MARCH 23, 2014

The College of Charleston Board of Trustees met on March 22 and voted to offer South Carolina Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, a 1969 alumnus of the College of Charleston, the position of 22nd president of the College of Charleston.

Lt. Gov. McConnell will be formally introduced to the campus and the community upon successful conclusion of a contract.

“We believe that Glenn McConnell is the best person to lead the College of Charleston, and we expect to quickly conclude the contract negotiations and formally introduce Lt. Gov. McConnell to the campus and the community,” says Greg Padgett ’79, chair of the Board of Trustees and chair of the Presidential Search Committee. “I want to thank the members of the Board, the members of the Presidential Search Committee and the entire College of Charleston community for their thoughtful input into the selection of the next president.”

The schedule for campus visits by presidential candidates has been announced and is posted below.


UPDATE – MARCH 6, 2014

As part of the College’s presidential search process, Dr. Jody Encarnation, Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, and Provost Martha Saunders will be visiting campus next week.

Dr. Encarnation plans to be on campus on Wednesday, March 12; Lt. Gov. McConnell on Thursday, March 13; and Provost Martha Saunders on Friday, March 14.

Schedules for the visits of the presidential finalists are being developed and will be distributed to the campus community as soon as those schedules are finalized.

The letters of interest and the resumes for the finalists are posted below.

UPDATE – MARCH 4, 2014

The College of Charleston Board of Trustees met on Feb. 28, 2014, for the purpose of considering candidates for the position of President of the College.

Board Chair Greg Padgett called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Padgett opened the meeting by noting that the Board of Trustees had met on February 11 to consider candidates for the position of president. He then noted that the board would continue the discussion of candidates in executive session.

At that point, the Board voted to enter executive session.

When the board resumed open session, Mr. Padgett announced that no action had been taken in executive session. A motion was made to vote on potential finalists, with candidates identified by letter to preserve confidentiality. Chair Padgett announced that the top five candidates would be contacted to ascertain their interest in becoming finalists, at which time the names of the finalists would be announced.

Subsequent to the meeting, the potential finalists were contacted, with three candidates indicating their intention to become finalists. Vitas for these candidates will be posted to the search website as soon as they are available.


Update – February 11, 2014

The College of Charleston Board of Trustees met on Feb. 11, 2014, for the purpose of considering candidates for the position of President of the College.

Board Chair Greg Padgett called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. Mr. Padgett opened the meeting by noting to the Board that the Presidential Search Committee had met on February 7 and 8 to conduct preliminary screening interviews with candidates. The Search Committee voted at that meeting to approve a confidential list of candidates to submit to the Board of Trustees for consideration.

Mr. Padgett then thanked the members of the Search Committee for their outstanding service, and commended the work of AGB Search, in identifying a well-qualified pool of candidates to recommend to the Board of Trustees.

Mr. Padgett told the board that at the meeting today they would consider candidates for the position of president. He noted that only the names of the finalists will be released to the public, with the Board of Trustees deciding those finalists. Mr. Padgett said he hopes to be able to announce the name of the 22nd President of the College of Charleston in March or April.

At that point, the Board voted to enter executive session.

When the board resumed open session, Mr. Padgett announced that no action had been taken in executive session. He thanked the board for a productive discussion of candidates for the position of president and said he looks forward to continuing the discussion of candidates at the board’s next meeting, which will be scheduled at time and date to be determined.


Update – February 10, 2014 

The Presidential Search Committee held its fourth meeting on Feb. 7-8, 2014, for the purpose of conducting preliminary screening interviews with 10 candidates for the presidency of the College of Charleston.

Search Committee Chair Greg Padgett called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. and welcomed the members of the committee. Mr. Padgett also welcomed Dr. Jamie Ferrare, the lead Search Committee Consultant and Senior Vice President of the Association of Governing Boards and Principal of AGB Search.

Mr. Padgett commended the search committee on the progress made in reviewing the more than 100 applications received and looks forward to the next two days of candidate screening interviews.

At that point, the committee voted to enter executive session. The meeting recessed for the evening at 6:45 p.m.

Mr. Padgett reconvened the meeting in executive session at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8.

When the committee returned to open session, the committee voted to approve a confidential list of candidates to be recommended for consideration by the College of Charleston Board of Trustees. The names of candidates selected for recommendation to the board will not be disclosed. Once the Board declares a list of finalists, that list will be made public.

Mr. Padgett thanked the members of the committee for their outstanding service, and commended their work, and the work of AGB Search, in identifying a well-qualified pool of candidates to recommend to the Board of Trustees. He noted that a College of Charleston Board of Trustees meeting will be convened on Tuesday, Feb. 11, so that the Board may consider the candidates recommended by the committee.

The committee then adjourned.

After the meeting, Mr. Padgett stated: “Throughout the entire search process, I have been extremely impressed and thankful for the dedication and hard work of the search committee and of our partners at AGB Search, whose efforts have yielded a well-qualified group of candidates to recommend to the Board of Trustees for consideration.”


Update – January 24, 2014

The Presidential Search Committee held its third meeting on January 24, 2014.

Search Committee Chair Greg Padgett called the meeting to order at 12 p.m. and welcomed the members of the committee. Mr. Padgett also welcomed Dr. Jamie Ferrare, the lead Search Committee Consultant and Senior Vice President of the Association of Governing Boards and Principal of AGB Search.

Mr. Padgett noted that the search committee continues to make progress in reviewing the applications received for the position of president. He noted that the process is on schedule and that the committee expects to give the College’s Board of Trustees a list of no more than five candidates in unranked order by Monday, February 10. The Board of Trustees then would name finalists for the position and invite those finalists to interview on campus.

At that point, the committee voted to enter executive session.

After the committee returned to open session, the committee voted to approve a confidential list of 10 candidates selected for preliminary screening interviews by the search committee at a date and place to be determined. The names of candidates selected for preliminary screening interviews will not be disclosed.

After approving the list of candidates for preliminary interviews, the committee adjourned.


Update - January 17, 2014

The Presidential Search Committee held its second meeting on January 17, 2014. 

Search Committee Chair Greg Padgett called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. and welcomed the members of the committee.

Mr. Padgett also welcomed Dr. Jamie Ferrare, the lead Search Committee Consultant and Senior Vice President of the Association of Governing Boards and Principal of AGB Search. Mr. Ferrare leads a search and consulting team of 30 consultants, 10 research associates and 5 office staff. Before joining AGB Search, he was a past president and a senior consultant with Academic Search, Inc., where he served for 10 years and successfully completed searches at all levels. Since 2000, he has led more than 100 searches for Presidents, Academic Vice Presidents and Deans in public and private colleges and universities as well as church affiliated schools and independent liberal arts and fine arts institutions.

The minutes of the November 7, 2013, search committee meeting were approved. Mr. Padgett then updated the committee on the search process, which included meetings between AGB Search and more than 250 members of various campus constituencies. After these meetings, an advertisement was developed and placed in publications including The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Diverse Jobs Search, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, American Conference of Academic Deans, and Women in Higher Education. Candidate applications were due by January 14.

Mr. Padgett reminded the committee that it is requested to give the Board of Trustees a list of no more than five candidates in unranked order by Monday, February 10. The Board of Trustees will consider the recommended candidates. Only the names of the finalists will be released to the public, with the Board of Trustees deciding those finalists. Mr. Padgett told the committee that the Board of Trustees hopes to be able to announce the name of the 22nd president of the College of Charleston as early as March.

At that point, the committee resolved to enter executive session. After the committee resumed regular session, Mr. Padgett announced that no action was taken during executive session.

After the meeting, Mr. Padgett stated:  “Thus far, the committee has received over 100 applications for the College of Charleston presidency. The search committee is excited by the exceptional quality and size of our candidate pool.  Our applicants are current university presidents, chief academic officers, deans, and leaders from the public and private sectors, with applicants coming from Charleston, the Southeast, and throughout the United States.  My colleagues and I are convinced that one of these individuals will be an outstanding 22nd president of the College.”

Mr. Ferrare of AGB Search stated: “The applications received in this presidential search are within the top quartile of the many searches we’ve conducted, both in terms of the number of applications and the outstanding breadth and experience of the candidate pool.”


Update - November 26, 2013

AGB Search confirmed that Dr. James Ferrare, Managing Principal of AGB Search, will be the lead consultant for the College of Charleston Presidential Search and Dr. Robert Lawless will provide support and information as needed.


Update - November 7, 2013

The Presidential Search Committee held its first meeting on November 7, 2013.

Search committee chair Greg Padgett welcomed the committee members and thanked them for their service to the College of Charleston Presidential Search Committee.

Padgett introduced Dr. Robert Lawless of AGB Search, a national firm that will assist the committee in finding qualified candidates for the position. Chair Padgett announced that an advertisement will run in the Chronicle of Higher Education on Nov. 29, as well as in other prominent publications, and that applications will be accepted until January 14, 2014.

The meeting date for the next Search Committee meeting will be announced as soon as it is available.
