Joe Thompson serves as a member of the Board representing the first congressional district and began his service in 1998.  He retired from the Medical University of SC in 2016 after a long career in higher education/healthcare administration as Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine.  He and his wife, Laura Jenkins Thompson, live in Mount Pleasant, SC and are alumni of the College of Charleston and native Charlestonians.  He received a Master of Health Administration degree from MUSC and completed numerous higher education leadership development programs during his long career.  He served as a financial consultant for the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation for over sixteen years.  He is a former Vice President of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, served on the Clemson University Board of Visitors, and the Lowcountry Graduate Center Board of Directors.  In addition to his experience in higher education administration, he has more than twenty years of management experience in the private sector in the areas of manufacturing and healthcare administration.  He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1969-1975 while pursuing his undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston.  Actively involved in the Charleston Community, he is a member of the Exchange Club of Charleston and supports a multitude of civic and philanthropic causes.  In 2005 he received the Order of the Palmetto, the State's highest civilian honor, for his outstanding leadership, integrity, and support for his many endeavors benefitting the Lowcountry throughout his distinguished career.  Socially, he is a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, the Hobcaw Yacht Club, the Sea Island Yacht Club, the Hibernian Society, and St. Philip's.  His interests include golf, boating, and gardening.
